Certified Chimney Sweeping

“Chimney sweeping” is a simple-sounding name for a complicated and important process. When you hire Jay Walker Enterprises for a chimney sweeping job, we're not just making your fireplace look spic and span — we're working to help maintain the proper levels of safety and efficiency in your chimney system, and helping you protect your home and family.
A large focus of the chimney sweeping process with wood-burning appliances is removing creosote, an unavoidable and highly-combustible deposit that builds up on flue walls over time and use. Creosote develops naturally as your chimney is working to vent smoke, gases and particles from your fireplace — as the hot byproducts of combustion rise, they hit the flue walls, which are cooler, and condensation results. That condensation develops into creosote, which layers thicker and thicker the longer you go (or the more you use your fireplace) between chimney sweeping appointments. Heavy and thick layers of creosote can begin to constrict the flue, and create a serious fire hazard — which is why regular chimney sweeping is recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The Chimney Safety Institute of America's recommendation is for homeowners to have their masonry chimney swept when it reaches an eighth of an inch of buildup, or sooner if any glazed creosote is present (it looks almost like dark, shiny sugar candy, and is highly dangerous). Prefabricated chimneys should be swept as well, as a noticeable level of buildup develops — the acids in those deposits can begin to wear away at the chimney itself.

Chimney Sweeping Won't Make A Mess, And Won't Take Long

Some homeowners worry that having their chimney swept will take forever and send soot and dust flying around the home. Neither of those assumptions is true.
A chimney sweeping job generally takes an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the chimney and the level of buildup. And Jay Walker Enterprises' CSIA-certified technicians take pains to make sure that dirt and soot are contained as we sweep — we use state-of-the-art tools, lay drop cloths and treat your home with the same care we'd expect in our own homes.

Preparing For A Sweeping Appointment Is Easy

Our technicians will take care of the whole chimney sweeping process, from protecting your home to properly and thoroughly cleaning the chimney from the firebox all the way up the flue. But there are a few things you can do to help:
      • Avoid using your fireplace for at least a day, prior to your appointment
      • If furniture or breakables are within a few feet of the fireplace/stove, we recommend moving those items
      • Before we arrive, confine pets in another room, so they'll be safe and clean

Know Your Chimney – Schedule A Thorough Chimney Inspection!

Your chimney system's role in your home is an important one. As you use your fireplace or stove, high heat, flammable debris and toxic gases are produced as a byproduct of combustion, and your chimney holds those byproducts and routes them up and out of your living area. Doing so protects your home and the people in it, and, more simply, allows you to more safely enjoy having a warm fire in your home. When your chimney system isn't working properly, you could end up with a smelly, smoky space, or even a chimney fire that spreads to your home.

The best way to ensure that your chimney system is prepared to fulfill its important role is to keep up with annual professional chimney inspections. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) both recommend that chimneys get swept annually. That allows trained, experienced professionals to make sure your flue liner isn't damaged, your flue isn't blocked, creosote deposits haven't reached excessively dangerous levels, and that your system is in good working condition.
Annual chimney inspections are an important part of being a conscientious homeowner. And at Jay Walker Enterprises, our goal is to make sure that the chimneys of Tallahassee and the surrounding areas are as safe and efficient as they can be.
